Visas & Entry Requirements
Travelers from the United States and Canada can enter Turkey visa-free.
Many other nationalities require a tourist visa to visit. These can be obtained either from a Turkish consulate or through the e-Visa system (eligibility dependent). Apply online in just a few steps: www.evisa.gov.tr
Cruise Ship Passengers arriving at Turkish seaports may enter visa-free for up to 72 hours, provided they stay within the port city or nearby areas. If arriving/departing by air for a cruise, a visa is required.
Travel Tips
Turkish is the official language. However, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and shops.
The local currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY or TL). As of September 2025: $1 USD ≈ 41.18 TL. The largest banknote is 200 TL. USD and Euros are widely accepted in tourist zones and bazaars.
ATMs and credit cards (Visa & MasterCard) are widely used. American Express is accepted in fewer locations. Australian Dollars are not commonly accepted—bring USD or EUR.
Cultural Etiquette
Turkey is a secular country with a Muslim majority and vibrant Christian and Jewish communities, especially in Istanbul and Izmir. Expect a modern, welcoming, and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Most shops and restaurants are open daily from 10 AM to 10 PM.
Modest clothing is required. Women should bring a scarf for mosque visits. Shoes must be removed.

Voltage: 220–240V, with two-round prong European sockets. Adapters are required for non-European plugs.
